Why Take a Supplement?
Most people do not get all the nutrients they need from their diet. Cooking, processing, not eating enough of the right foods, caloric restriction, loss of freshness, and devitalized soils contribute to sub-clinical malnutrition. When the body doesn't get enough nutrients, you continue to have an appetite even though your caloric needs have been met. This is one of the causes of an overweight condition. All Supplements are Not Created Equal
Less than 10% of all supplements conform to OTC pharmaceutical grade standards which the AmeriSciences line surpasses. As a result, the ingredients many companies use may be impure and unsafe. (A recent study showed that of seven off-the-shelf products tested from a leading national retail supplement chain, four contained levels of lead higher than that considered safe for daily intake.) NASA Johnson Space Center has entered into a Space Act Agreement with AmeriSciences to develop and test nutritional supplements intended for astronaut use during earth-bound conditioning and in-flight physical maintenance.

Based on a need to provide increased nutritional support for long-duration space flight, NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) has spent the last several years compiling scientific data on the basis of an astronaut-specific multivitamin formulation.

NASA partnered with AmeriSciences in July 2005 to develop a multivitamin formulation for potential use by astronauts. Based on NASA’s need to provide increased nutritional support for long-duration spaceflight, scientists at JSC have amassed information on multivitamin formulations. AmeriSciences manufactures a multivitamin that meets many of NASA’s needs.

The Space Act Agreement sets forth short-term and long-term objectives for both parties.
