Why Does GM's CEO Lie
to the American People?

This interview took place in March of 2023

INTERVIEWER: Right now, GM, in terms of the electric vehicle market, you have about nine to ten percent. Tesla has about 63 percent of the market. Five years from now, if you succeed, what does that pie-chart look like?

GM CEO MARY BARRA: Well, we have said, just like we're the leader today, we have been the leader in the United States, and we've been number two in China for many years, I think we're incredibly well positioned, and we're not going to seed our leadership position to anyone.

The problem is, Ms Barra didn't answer the question asked of her. She behaved as a typical politician and took the opportunity to say something that she wants everyone to believe. And she knows what she said is a lie. And so do you. How do you know? The interviewer just stated to Ms Barra, "GM, in terms of the electric vehicle market, you have about nine to ten percent. Tesla has about 63 percent of the market." Did Ms Barra then refute that statement? Did she disagree with the interviewer? Did she try and correct the interviewer? No, no, and no. She simply lied. She is going by the old adage, "If you tell a lie, and tell it to enough people, and keep saying it over and over again, it becomes the truth."

Barra is not a stupid person; she is very intelligent. So she knows full well that what the interviewer said is true, and that GM is not the leader in the EV market, Tesla is. But she also knows that if she lies and says GM is the leader, she knows the interviewer is not going to take her to task for saying the polar opposite of what he just stated. She knows he will not question her as to why she is saying what is in direct contradiction to the facts that he just said. She is simply taking the opportunity to lie to the American people and push a narrative that GM wants pushed.

And how do we know that she knows she is lying?

And apologists for GM have said that Barra was simply referring to all vehicles sold, and not just EVs when she said that GM's "the leader". But that isn't true either. VW and Toyota are the leaders in units sold of all cars... and she knows that too. So since the conversation was about EVs, she was referring to GM's share of the EV market; and she lied. Remember this if you're considering buying a vehicle from GM. I want to buy my car from a company where the CEO not only doesn't lie to me, but will listen if I have a suggestion, and will implement it if it's a good suggestion, as Tesla's CEO does.
